I am old enough to remember the Virginia Slims cigarette brand that was introduced in 1968 and marketed to young professional women using the slogan “You’ve come a long way, baby.” Talk about an effective marketing hook. Too bad it was for something as harmful as cigarettes. Some say the campaign was responsible for a rapid increase in smoking among teenage girls.  Quite possibly so, I began smoking in my teenage years — and smoked Virginia Slims.

I am proud to say I quit smoking more than 25 years ago. This year the “Great American Smokeout” will take place on November 19, 2009. The purpose of the event is to set aside a day to help smokers quit smoking, quit using tobacco products, for at least one day, with the hope that they will quit completely.

New Jersey residents can get smoking cessation support through the New Jersey QuitNet community. New Jersey’s free and low-cost Quit Services, as well as other services and tools from the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association can be found online at www.njquit2win.com or by calling the New Jersey Quitline at 1-866-NJ-STOPS.

Having lost my beloved father-in-law to emphysema last year (Dad was a smoker for many years) I feel compelled to reach out and encourage others to quit smoking for good. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, the more support you receive from friends and family, the more likely you are to quit smoking.
