“Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue.” - Governor Bill Richardson (NM)
As women, we a re continuously called upon to ensure that our families receive the health care screenings they need. We are the ones who typically schedule regular checkups with the pediatrician, family practitioner, gynecologist, and other health care providers. But what about the men in our lives? Regular checkups and screenings are equally as important for men as they are for women and children.
June is Men’s Health Month. The Men’s Health Network (MHN) encourages women to expand on their traditional role as the family’s health care leader by encouraging men to take a more active role in their preventive health care. See page 8 for a schedule of checkups and age-appropriate screenings for men. Please pass along this checklist to the important men in your life.
June is also Home Safety Month. The Home Safety Council has launched mysafehome. org to help families nationwide make their homes safer and protect against the leading causes of home injury - falls, poisonings, fires and burns, choking/suffocation and drowning. Learn how you can customize a safety plan for your own home.
In closing, I would like to recognize and thank Cheryl McLaughlin. Cheryl began publishing Camden County Woman in 1999 in response to the need for an educational resource that would serve the women of Camden County. As a nurse and health educator, Cheryl is passionate about health and wellness related issues. As I assume Cheryl’s role as publisher/editor of CCW, I remain committed to her mission of empowering women with the knowledge they need to make educated decisions for themselves and their families. It has been an honor and privilege working with Cheryl these past 8 years as CCW’s Director of Marketing and Promotions and I am most grateful for this wonderful new opportunity that Cheryl has afforded me. Here’s to your health and the health of your loved ones!
