Sterling Medical Promotes Diabetic Awareness |
Trick or Treat? Happy Thanksgiving! It seems like yesterday you were applying your sunscreen. Your children survived their first day of school — and so did you! And your family has settled into their new routine, but busy Moms maintain schedules that continue to fill up as the season changes with more and more “To-do’s”. Since many of us now care for or coordinate care for our ill or aging parents, the “To-do list” seems to never end. Not to mention all of those parents — and sons and daughters, husbands and wives — who are affected by diabetes in this country. The stress can build up as we try to accomplish every task to keep our families healthy and happy.
Enter Sterling Medical Services. Sterling is based in Moorestown, NJ and is a national mail order provider of diabetic, incontinence, ostomy, urological and wound care supplies. Our goal is to make your life
easier and reduce the stress of obtaining your family’s medical supplies.
We understand your time is precious, so we eliminate unnecessary trips to the store. You save gas and avoid the temptation to make impulse purchases that are lurking in the aisles of the mega chain stores!
One of Sterling’s goals is to promote Diabetic Awareness in its local communities. Recent studies indicate that the early detection of diabetic symptoms and treatment can decrease the chance of developing the complications of diabetes.
Diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States, and it has no cure. Did you know that 11.5 million, or 10.2% of all women in the U.S aged 20 years or older, have diabetes? It is estimated that nearly one quarter of them do not know they have diabetes. Women with diabetes are also more likely to have a heart attack at a younger age, than women without diabetes. This disease creates unique challenges for women because diabetes can affect both mothers and their unborn children. Diabetes can also cause difficulties during pregnancy such as miscarriage or birth defects.
Gestational diabetes develops in 2% to 5% of all pregnancies but often disappears when a pregnancy is over. Women who have had gestational diabetes or have given birth to a baby weighting more than 9 pounds are at an increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Some of the Common Symptoms of the disease are: - Urinating often
- Increased hunger and thirst
- Unusual tiredness
- Unusual weight lose or gain
- Slow-healing sores
- Frequent infections
- Blurry vision
- Burning pain in arms, hands legs or feet
Risk Factors include:- a history of diabetes in the family

- being inactive
- having high cholesterol or high blood pressure
- being over age 45
- being of African, Asian, Hispanic, Native American or Pacific Island heritage
- exposure to certain viruses that damage pancreas
